Ancient Method for Balance

Qigong [tʃiːˈɡɒŋ] is an ancient Chinese mind-body practice that dates back more than 4,000 years, rooted in the foundational principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The name itself combines Qi—the vital life-force energy that flows through all living things—and Gong—the skill or mastery cultivated through dedicated practice. For millennia, practitioners have used its gentle, rhythmic movements and meditative breathing to dissolve blockages, lower stress and keep the body's internal energy moving freely.

Cultivating Energetic Flow

This refined practice offers an immediate, sophisticated method to shift dense, stagnant energy without rigid rules or complicated breathing techniques. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, physical or emotional discomfort is a signal that the movement of Qi has stalled. When energy flows freely, the discomfort dissolves.

Rhythmic movements like full-body shaking and heel tapping are fantastic ways to rapidly awaken the nervous system and release accumulated stress. This practice swiftly dissolves heaviness and tension, leaving you with a sensation of lightness and clarity.

Note on Stillness
True peacefulness must not be confused with stagnation or numbness. Feeling stuck carries a heavy, dense quality that weighs the system down. Authentic peacefulness, by contrast, is the capacity to rest elegantly in absolute stillness—with nowhere to go, nothing to fix and zero pressure to be anywhere else.

The Joint Loosening Sequence

Tension naturally accumulates within the joints. Gently mobilising them before beginning any deeper energetic work ensures a smooth, unrestricted flow.

If you are recovering from an injury or navigating pain—such as chronic shoulder or knee discomfort—approach these movements with absolute gentleness. Only move within a range that feels entirely comfortable, and never force a sequence that triggers pain.

Stand tall and grounded, with your feet a foot-length apart. Fully relax your shoulders, neck and arms. This protocol progresses deliberately from head to toe. Execute these movements with unhurried precision to honour your body.

  • The Neck | Roll your head slowly in circles, 10 times in each direction.
  • The Shoulders | Extend your arms and rotate your shoulder joints, 10 times forward and 10 times backward on each side.
  • The Elbows | Circle your forearms at the elbow joint, 10 times in each direction on both arms.
  • The Wrists | Circle your hands at the wrists, 10 times in each direction on both hands.
  • The Fingers | Vigorously open and close your hands to stretch your fingers 10 times.
  • The Hips | Roll your hips in slow, expansive circles, 10 times in each direction.
  • The Knees | Stand with your knees together and execute gentle, controlled circles, 10 times in each direction.
  • The Ankles | Lift one foot slightly and rotate your ankle, 10 times in each direction on both sides.
  • The Toes | Fully spread and squeeze your toes 10 times on each foot.
  • Pause | Stand in stillness for a moment, turning your awareness inward to observe the subtle shifts in your body. You may close your eyes if it feels supportive.

Essential Practices for Safety

  • Listen to the Body’s Wisdom | If you are recovering from an injury or experience acute pain, approach this practice with absolute gentleness. Never force a movement or push past your body's boundaries; if an exercise causes discomfort, pause or soften the movement immediately.
  • Protect the Joints | Never lock your knees straight. Maintaining a micro-bend in the knees safely absorbs physical shock and protects the integrity of your alignment.
  • The Surface | Always practice on a thick yoga mat or a plush surface if hard floors cause discomfort.
  • Pregnancy Modifications | Avoid forceful impact if you are pregnant. Instead, rise smoothly onto your toes and lower your weight back down with soft, deliberate control.

High-Efficiency Clearance | Heel Tapping

This efficient clearing technique sends a vibration through your skeletal and nervous systems to disperse stubborn, stagnant energy.

  • The Posture | Stand tall and place your feet hip-width apart. Fully release any tension in your shoulders and arms.
  • The Action | Rise smoothly onto your tiptoes, then allow your heels to drop with a firm, solid contact against the floor. Find a natural, rhythmic cadence, repeating this 20 to 30 times.
  • The Release | Allow the physical vibration travel all the way up your spine, releasing any tightness in the back and neck. Following the sequence, shake your arms, hands and entire body intentionally to clear any lingering density. Extend your legs out one at a time, finishing by raising both arms fully above your head to complete the clearance.
  • The Stillness | After releasing the old energy, return to still standing with your eyes closed. Observe the refined, tingling sensation of active energy circulating through your system.
